New Seasons in Full Swing

With new seasons in full swing, October has an endless variety of shows to check out!

The month kicks off with I’m With Her, a touching folk trio made up of three Grammy-nominated acts, ready to charm the pants off the Jack Singer Concert Hall on October 2. The trio is known for their restless, romantic and emotionally complex narratives, woven into every song.

Then loosen those belts for some gut-busting laughter with Alberta Theatre Project’s Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead. The Hamlet characters were actually killed off stage by Shakespeare, but this wildly popular play explores their final days in a Monty Python-esque comedy.

For a program with more cultural relevance, the Making Treaty 7 Cultural Society presents KIITISTSINNONIKS (Our Mothers). Written, directed and designed by an all-female crew, these never-before heard stories of hope, resilience and ancestry were created in solidarity with the community’s Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women. The program runs from October 24 – 26 at the Martha Cohen Theatre.

Nearing the end of the month, the local musicians share the spotlight.

The Calgary Civic Symphony presents Romantic Russians, featuring Thomas Yu on the piano. Yu is Calgary’s own internationally recognized star pianist and periodontist, playing Rachmaninoff’s most celebrated piano concerto on October 28 in the Jack Singer Concert Hall.

Then, on October 29, Calgary’s Reuben and the Dark is a rising star, made up of five multi-instrumentalists and vocalists from across western Canada’s independent music scene. They’re known for their chilling, emotive folk and soul music, driven by introspective lyrics. Presented by Calgary Folk Fest, Reuben and the Dark perform at the Jack Singer on October 30.

Have an outstanding October!
