Playground Funding

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays, Calgary Mackay Nose Hill!

It has been a busy fall season in the House and I am proud to be your voice in the Legislature.

November was a busy month getting ready to go back to session, stakeholder consultations about my private member’s bill to address unemployed and under employed Albertans, and advocating for 4 schools in Mackay Nose Hill who are still without playgrounds.

The government announced $200,000 in funding for a school playground in Penbrooke Meadows, which at the time was an NDP-held riding, and that doesn’t seem fair. In my constituency there are four schools—Our Lady of Grace, Kenneth D. Taylor, St. Bede, and St. Hubert—whose parent councils have worked and are still working extremely hard to fundraise for their schools’ much-needed playgrounds; they are no less deserving of this funding. I reached out to the Minister of Education, not only in advocating for the four schools in my constituency, but to also ask what the process and framework is to get such funding as it is not transparent. I echo the concerns heard from many parents over the last few weeks: safe playgrounds are essential for children to develop physically and socially. Thank-you to everyone who has reached out in regards to this matter, continue to reach out and I will communicate any updates on this important matter.

Through October and November, I met with key stakeholders such as First Nations organizations, educational institutions, Economic Development organizations, recruiters and consultants regarding my private member’s bill introduced this fall. These consultations provided a clear need for this bill to address getting Albertans back to work in positions representative of their skill set, not just any job.

Many people in our community enjoy the great facilities and programs at Huntington Hills Community Association (HHCA). It’s a fantastic organization that offers us the opportunity to stay healthy and active. In addition to their recreational facilities they have a pre-school and after school care as well as various family support programs with in-house social workers. We hope you take advantage of their facilities.

This year I am sponsoring the Huntington Hills Community Association’s Children’s Christmas Party. There will be many treats and activities for the whole family! I am really looking forward to seeing you there.

Wishing you the very best this holiday season.
