According to Statistics Canada’s monthly labour force survey, Alberta added 20,000 full-time jobs in July. This means our province’s unemployment rate has dropped to the lowest level since before the pandemic started. We have further to go, but Alberta’s Recovery Plan is working, and jobs are coming back to Alberta in large numbers. We also recently heard good news about our fiscal situation from the finance minister. Our anticipated budget deficit has been cut in half, down to $7.8 billion.

Major economic organizations like the Conference Board of Canada, National Bank of Canada, and Bank of Montreal have forecasted that Alberta will lead Canada in economic growth this year. A new forecast by Alberta Central – the central banking facility, service bureau, and trade association for Alberta’s credit unions – is projecting that the provincial economy will grow by a whopping 7.5 percent this year! According to their report, our economy will grow beyond its 2014 peak and erase all the losses we’ve experienced since 2015.

Alberta’s government is making every effort to attract investment in diverse industries. Our tech sector’s growth was recently described as “absolutely bonkers”, and our petrochemical diversification program is making it more attractive to upgrade and refine petroleum products in Alberta – providing jobs that too often wind up in Texas and Louisiana instead of Alberta.

We’re even bringing Hollywood to the prairies. Since the Film and Television Tax Credit launched in January 2020, it has attracted 50 productions to Alberta with total production costs of $955 million, creating 9,000 new direct and indirect jobs in the province.

Finally, my team is starting to organize our 9th annual Veterans’ Food Drive. If you can volunteer on either November 11 or 13, we’d love your help for this very good cause. Get in touch with us at [email protected].
