Thrilled that Summer is officially here? You bet! So, bring on long sunny days, sports and recreation for all ages and all that we cherish about this all too fleeting season. June brings musings on ambitious summer plans and ways to enjoy both our backyards and Alberta’s beautiful bounty of mountains, streams, lakes and forests. I anticipate many will be welcoming family and friends, and celebrating community, as festivals and events gratefully get back into full swing.

Personal favourites of mine, after the many community-inspired parades, BBQ’s and Movie Nights that I love, include Dragon Boat Races, FolkFest, GlobalFest, Chinatown Street Festival and of course, The Calgary Stampede. I hope that all will take the opportunity to get out and enjoy the hidden gems in our community, city and across the province in support of our tourism and hospitality sectors.

As for many of you, I love my music, with classic rock a favoured genre. Music brings us together in joy, appreciation and celebration, and I consider myself blessed to be a part of Parkland’s Summerfest, scheduled to take us back a generation on June 25th with headliners April Wine. This is usually a sold-out event but reach out to Park96 for more information on tickets. A shout out as well to a couple of community volunteers that have been instrumental (pun intended) in bringing music to the community prior to and throughout COVID – Sylvia and Jacqueline. Sylvia at Cornerstone Music Café has long hosted summer serenades at the Café, and this year’s “Community Festival In Your Neck of the Woods”, brings a full day of free live music to Deer Ridge Plaza on Sunday June 26th from 10am-3pm. Many vendors and local organizations will be on site for your interest and enjoyment. Jacqueline was the brains behind the Community Stompede, now known as “Community IsoBreaker” that started as a remedy for the isolation and loss of community spirit we were all experiencing during strict COVID protocols in Spring of 2020. It was a welcome relief to be outside, socially distanced and enjoying the talents of our friends and neighbours. What started in Bonavista was exported to other communities to bring light and hope in a time of uncertainty. Community IsoBreaker will be continuing this Spring/Summer, so please check their Facebook page for dates/times. Sylvia and Jacqueline are examples of Calgary-Fish Creek’s best. Local residents, local business owners and local volunteers extraordinaire!

Please mark your calendars for my annual Stampede “Hoe Down in the Downs”, Saturday July 9th 11am-2pm in the parking lot at my office. We will have games, good food, and of course live music! Happy Summer everyone…and keep the feedback coming to ensure I can effectively represent you.
