January 2022 MLA Report – Calgary South East – Matt Jones

Calgary South East

Alberta’s economy is on the verge of another boom that will be much more economically diverse than ones we have seen in the past. Our economy is seeing growth across multiple economic sectors including technology, renewable energy, and film and television. This diversified growth can be seen in the $7 billion of investments that were announced in one week in November alone. These projects will create thousands of good, full-time jobs for Albertans and help ensure Alberta has strong economic growth in 2021 and 2022.

Amazon Web Services announced that they will be building their second Canadian hub in Calgary. At $4.3 billion, this is the largest technology sector investment we have seen in the history of our province, a move that would not have been possible without the business-friendly policies our government has implemented. This investment, which will create approximately 1,000 good, full-time jobs for workers, shows how Alberta’s economy is growing increasingly diversified.

Shell Canada and Silicon Ranch Company revealed plans to build a 58-megawatt solar farm near Sherwood Park. This solar farm will be the size of 313 Canadian football fields and will serve as a renewable energy source to help power the refinery in Strathcona County. This investment highlights the bright future for renewable energy in Alberta.

We also saw a $2.5 billion dollar project announced by Northern Petrochemical Corporation up north. This investment in the Grand Prairie region will generate up to 4,000 good, full-time jobs during the construction phase and will continue to employ approximately 400 Albertans once the facility is fully operational. This shows us once again that Alberta’s energy sector will be able to find continued success, even in a more diversified economy.

These investments into Alberta generate jobs and economic growth for the province and are signs that Alberta’s Recovery Plan is working to get Albertans back to work.
