Building a Stronger Health Care System Together

This month, I am pleased to be sharing two giant steps forward to improve health care in Alberta, today and for the years to come.

Modernizing Alberta’s Primary Health Care System (MAPS)

Our government is launching Modernizing Alberta’s Primary Health Care System (MAPS) to stabilize and strengthen primary health care across the province and lay the foundation for a robust and more resilient system in the future.

Alberta’s primary health care leaders and national and global experts are being brought together to identify immediate and long-term improvements over the next five to 10 years to strengthen Alberta’s primary health care system.

Modernizing primary health care will stabilize and strengthen primary health care across the province and lay the foundation for a robust and more resilient system in the future. One of the priorities for this work is to ensure all Albertans have access to a family physician or primary health care provider no matter where they live. The MAPS work will build on the strong primary health care foundation that already exists in Alberta, including being the first province to introduce Primary Care Networks.

Interim recommendations will be submitted this Fall and a final report with a recommended strategy to modernize Alberta’s primary health care system will be finalized in spring 2023.

Alberta Medical Association (AMA) Agreement Reached

A new agreement between our government and the Alberta Medical Association (AMA) that will see the government invest an estimated $750 million to stabilize the health-care system has been ratified by physicians throughout the province. A total of 70.2 percent of physicians who voted were in favour of the new framework. The agreement covers four fiscal years, from April 1, 2022, to March 31, 2026.

I am very pleased that physicians support this new agreement. It will stabilize the health system, target areas of concern, and support Albertans’ health-care needs. With its significant investments, this agreement will provide a path forward to address the challenges facing the health system and issues brought forward by physicians. We will work together with physicians as partners as we move forward.
