Calgary West

Albertans have been blessed to enjoy our precious summer months and a return to familiar activities that form our daily lives. We have gained renewal through the many opportunities we have shared with family and friends, both locally and through travel. The success of festive events such as the 2022 Calgary Stampede and the return of large numbers of visitors to our city and province has produced positive results and increasing optimism in many aspects of our society. The Alberta government’s continuing approach to spending and investing will cushion future oil price volatility and will help Albertans for the long term. To assist Albertans with the steep increases in the costs of living resulting from inflationary pressures, the government has reduced the cost burden to Albertans through implementing the following measures: extending the provincial fuel tax relief program ($0.13 pr litre) to October 1, providing monthly $50 bill credits for electricity for six consecutive months, starting in July, funding affordable childcare for parents, and providing grants to low-income students in high demand programs. Our provincial government is supporting caregivers and helping seniors stay in their homes longer by increasing funding for community care, continuing care, and home care programs. Increased investments have been allocated to modernize and expand continuing care capacity for seniors and vulnerable citizens throughout our province. $1.7 billion will go to community care while $1.2 billion and $750 million will go to continuing care and home care, respectively. The New Beginnings Bursary will help low-income students attend high-demand programs. 1,000 bursaries valued at $5,000 each will be awarded to help recipients pay for post secondary education and living costs. Support is available to individuals studying in programs that support key economic sectors identified in Alberta’s Recovery Plan, including energy, agriculture and forestry, tourism, culture, technology, aerospace, aviation, and finance. Launching in the 2022/23 academic year, Alberta Student Aid will deliver funding to recipients who meet the eligibility criteria and have applied for funding beginning in August 2022.
