The spring sitting at the Alberta legislature saw new measures adopted to get Albertans back to work, diversify the economy, and make life more affordable for families. With the introduction of Budget 2022, a balanced budget was presented for the first time in more than a decade. Alberta’s government delivered on a key commitment to control spending and get the province’s finances back on track. The Alberta government is building on our province’s success as a reliable and responsible energy producer through natural gas, hydrogen, minerals, and geothermal development, reducing emissions, and enhancing First Nations participation. Alberta’s government continued to attract massive investments in aerospace, logistics, venture capital, and manufacturing, while positioning Alberta for further investments in hydrogen, tourism, tech and innovation, cultural industries, quantum computing research, hemp, and film and television. Alberta’s reputation and capacity for high quality agricultural and forestry products to meet global demand has increased. S&P Global Ratings has raised Alberta’s current long-term issuer credit rating to A+ from A with a continued stable outlook. This is the first upgrade of Alberta’s credit rating since 2001. It recognizes Alberta’s responsible fiscal management and strong economic growth strategy. Alberta’s population is expected to increase by almost 50% in the next 25 years. Investing $20.7 billion to build hundreds of projects and create 90,000 direct and indirect jobs over three years will ensure that we have the roads, schools, and hospitals for our needs. To support our province’s need for a qualified, expanding work force, Alberta’s government is investing more than $600 million over three years to help our residents develop new skills and grow their careers. Targeted enrolment expansion funding in Alberta’s post secondary institutions is focusing on creating almost 10,000 new seats in high-demand programs. This work has laid the foundation to continue creating jobs, diversifying the economy, and generating opportunities for every Albertan in the months and years to come. To confront the rising cost of living driven by record inflation, the government eliminated the 13-cent-per-litre fuel tax and passed legislation to provide rebates on electricity bills. These rebates will provide short term relief for Albertans while the government creates long term improvements to make the utility system more affordable.
