As Associate Minister of Mental Health and Addictions, I am pleased that we’re seeing a downward trend when it comes to opioid deaths in Alberta. Opioid deaths are down 44% in Alberta since the peak in November 2021. Over the past three years, the Alberta government has worked tirelessly to build a comprehensive recovery-oriented system of addiction and mental health care. Our focus when it comes to mental health and addiction is to ensure that every Albertan has every opportunity to improve their lives and recover from the challenges they face. The initiatives we have installed include:

• 8,000 more people having access to detox, treatment, and recovery every year

• Removing all user fees for publicly funded beds

• Supporting communities to support recovery

Experts say our approach is working. Read more: https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/calgary/alberta-opioid-deaths-decline-policies-1.6560836?fbclid=IwAR29jQODPtcZUdB1-EulK2PntighhS4rCHBv_VmZQD1sf2bNFWiKSRLel5A.

Recently, on an invitation from Sarah Guillemard, Manitoba’s Associate Minister of Mental Health and Addictions, I met with the Minister and her cabinet and caucus colleagues in Winnipeg. Alberta and Manitoba are committed to building recovery-oriented systems of care. We shared promising practices from both of our provinces during my visit.

As Albertans, we continue to have much for which we are grateful. Happy Thanksgiving to you and your loved ones.
