September 2021 MLA Report – Calgary West – Mike Ellis

Calgary West

I hope that you have enjoyed a relaxing summer with your family and friends. Though we continue to face challenges resulting from the pandemic, as Albertans, we are eternal optimists as we experience and anticipate brighter days ahead. With the excitement associated with the beginning of the 2021-2022 school year, students, parents, and school staff will be focusing on renewed learning opportunities and a return to more regular routines. We all want our youth to succeed. Together, we can use our best efforts to support our youth as they develop their skills and gain confidence and independence. As your MLA, I am humbled by my appointment as Associate Minister of Mental Health and Addiction. During the 12 years I served as a member of Calgary Police Service [CPS], and through the 2 years I served on the Alberta Secretariat for Action on Homelessness, I worked closely with some of Calgary’s most vulnerable citizens. I am drawing on this experience as I lead the transition of Alberta’s government towards a recovery-oriented system of care. In addition to improving the mental wellness of all Albertans, my top priorities include expanding services for youth, curtailing recidivism, and breaking the cycle of abuse. As we move through Alberta’s recovery, our focus will be on supporting everyday Albertans by prioritizing community led initiatives to improve mental wellness and initiate recovery from the illness of addiction. Recovery for everyone is possible. We want to ensure that support is accessible to all. Youth mental health hubs make it easier for youth outside of urban centres to seek help and supports closer to home. Through the expansion of youth hubs, a range of services will be available, including mental health and addiction services, primary health care, social services, housing, and school-based supports. Partners include community-based organizations, Alberta Health Services, Primary Care Networks, and other community partners. The expansion of the youth hub in Medicine Hat is the first of several such expansions throughout Alberta. It is another example of what can be accomplished when community partners come together to support youth in our communities. As your MLA, my main responsibility remains to serve as your representative and voice within the Alberta government. Please contact me through my constituency office should you want to share your questions and concerns with me.
