Friends,

School’s out and I am thrilled that so many students enjoyed the traditional graduation ceremony – for so many, a milestone that marks the successful completion of one of life’s important chapters. Congratulations to this year’s graduates, and to their families, whom I’m certain are quite proud.

The House of Commons has a schedule that somewhat matches that of our school system. The House rises towards the end of June (this year, the plan was for June 23), and comes back in September. It gives me more time in the summer to meet with constituents and organizations that are concerned with local issues with which I might be able to help.

And summers are always full of occasions in Calgary! I might see you at Stampede, but I’m also looking forward to seeing many of you at your neighbourhood events – whether that be at Inglewood Sunfest, the Chinatown Street Festival, or Marda Gras, where you will find my booth. Please drop by and say hello and give me your direct thoughts on what you think of decisions being made at the federal level. I appreciate the feedback.

It’s been quite a year in political life since last summer and September’s federal election. Much has changed, and it looks as though this is the Parliament that will last for a few years, due to the arrangement of support provided by the NDP for the Liberal government. The minority government that Canadians elected really functions like a Liberal majority, so my party’s job as Her Majesty’s Official Opposition needs to focus on strategically choosing where we can make amendments at parliamentary committees to legislation brought forth by the governing coalition. Members of other opposition parties are much more amenable to constructive changes at committee than they are in the House of Commons. Our work is cut out for us, but this is the representation that Canadians have elected, so we will work within the structure we have.

My office will also be open all summer serving constituents, so please do not hesitate to contact me at [email protected] or by phone at 403-244-1880 and keep up to date on my work in Parliament on my website, GregMcLeanMP.ca.

Sincerely,

Greg McLean
