Friends,

As summer winds now, September brings new beginnings and new opportunities. To all students – good luck with this year’s lessons, and I hope you make new friends and share wonderful new experiences!

Coincidentally, it will be like a new start for me, as well, as my party welcomes a new leader. I know that has riveted many for months, and I am looking forward to any new role that may arise for me. Although I have enjoyed adding value as my party’s natural resource critic these past two terms, particularly as it relates to the solutions provided by our local resource industry, I always serve at the leisure of the leader. My focus is to add value in policy development and fulfill our role as Her Majesty’s Loyal Opposition. In the end, good government should always be our goal.

Locally, I am looking forward to Alberta Cultural Days. For the entire month there will be events that celebrate the diverse culture and heritage of Albertans. Keep an eye out for the different events hosted by community organizations that will showcase and celebrate Alberta arts and culture.

On September 30, it will be the second annual National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day. Canadians across the country will take a moment to reflect and mourn all residential school attendees, survivors, and their families. It is a day when Canadians acknowledge that the impacts of the residential schools are an important component of reconciliation. We are asked to wear orange to reflect on Phyllis Webstad’s first day at a residential school where her new orange shirt was taken away from her. The symbolism of the orange shirt represents the stripping of Indigenous culture and language as Indigenous children were forced to attend residential schools. Last year, I attended a beautiful mural unveiling in Manchester Park; it was a wonderful way to acknowledge the importance of this day.
