The arrival of COVID-19 vaccines shows the power of free enterprise working together with science to address critical global issues. The next issue we face is how to relaunch our economy. Free enterprise must again lead this effort.
The task facing Canada is massive. Hundreds of thousands of jobs have disappeared, as the businesses that employed them closed. The deficit is reaching truly alarming proportions. The federal government now spends roughly two dollars for every dollar of revenue. Every day more than a billion dollars is added to our national debt. It is simply irresponsible to continue spending at this rate for long.
The key to compassionate, sustainable deficit reduction is private sector job creation. That means removing obstacles to key resource projects and cutting red tape to promote small business recovery. Rapid testing is essential to protect Canadians’ health while businesses reopen.
We must get the Canadian economy firing on all cylinders. Our strategy must be sensitive to regional economic differences and the needs of distinctive communities, like rural and remote areas, First Nations, and our inner cities. Sectors like hospitality, tourism, aviation, and energy require focused attention. We need tax cuts, or at least deferment of tax increases, until the economy has fully recovered. Job-creating trade agreements are needed with like-minded countries. The direction of this recovery should be decided by Canadians, not government orders. Now is not the time for a utopian ideological crusade to transform our economy.
The stakes are high. If we do not focus on job creation, eventually spending cuts that hurt the most vulnerable will result. No one wants that, least of all Conservatives. We will support programs that promote a free enterprise-driven job recovery, and work to focus the government’s attention on real solutions for all Canadians.
