Our city, our province, and Canada as a whole, are at a crossroads. How we go forward from here will determine whether we are able to pass on a prosperous society that offers our children the kinds of opportunities we enjoyed. As your federal Member of Parliament for Calgary Heritage, I want to keep you informed of developments in Ottawa that may affect these outcomes. I want you to know what we in the Official Opposition are doing to safeguard that future.

Even before COVID-19, Calgary faced serious challenges. Our energy-based economy was hard hit by low prices, transportation bottlenecks, international price wars, and unhelpful government regulation. Spending by municipal, provincial, and federal governments was out of control. White elephant projects like the Southwest BRT went ahead despite widespread opposition. Shutdowns due to the pandemic have worsened all these problems. Economic activity, tax revenue, and office occupancy have suffered. Transit ridership has fallen. Commuting patterns may see long-term changes, due to increased telework and online retailing. Meanwhile, the city has been playing a shell game, shifting around who the taxman will target. Shifting the burden around doesn’t make it lighter. Only lower taxes can do that.

We face serious problems that require serious solutions. Our most urgent problem today is to strike the right balance between protecting Canadians’ physical health, and restoring strong, private-sector economic growth to provide the jobs we need for sustained prosperity. This will require a coherent, comprehensive plan, that takes full advantage of the many strengths of our diverse Canadian economy. In the coming months, I will use this column to propose potential solutions, one topic at a time.

Please take my online survey at www.bobbenzenmp.ca and let me know your thoughts on how to bring prosperity back to our city and our country.
