Another year has come and gone, and here we are – at the end of 2021, already! We hope you and yours had a good year, a safe and healthy year, despite the challenges we all faced.

Deer Ridge Community Association Board Executive Update

At the Deer Ridge Community Association AGM in September, the membership elected a new 2nd Vice President, Mr. John Life. We welcome John as a new Board member and if you have not already met him, we hope there will be an opportunity for you to do so soon. In the meantime, we offer you the opportunity to learn a little more about John – check out his bio in this newsletter.

Skating Rinks

November was lovely and warm, but that has meant a later start to ice preparation, just as in previous years. However, there will be great ice, just as soon as we get consistently cold weather. Please come out and enjoy the two skating rinks – they are free and available to anyone, at any time. The rinks do not require reservations and we have two, so that one can be shinny hockey while the other is used for pleasure skating. A shout out to Mr. Bob Hall and the team of volunteers who flood, clear snow, and maintain the ice – you do a great job, and we appreciate you so much!

Upcoming Events

Upcoming events for Deer Ridge are COVID restrictions dependent – the Board is, however, still hoping to hold the Deer Ridge Annual January Family Skate. This event is normally held in January but may have a fallback date for February. The Family Skate is a free family and friends’ event – it has been a much anticipated and well attended event that features music, a fire to warm our hands and feet, hot dogs and hot chocolate if restrictions allow, and lots of skating, and we look forward to holding it again. Please watch the website for updates!

Upcoming Board Meetings

Deer Ridge CA Board meetings are held at 7:00 pm on the third Tuesday of the month. Locations are announced on the website – the Board has been having virtual meetings, but we hope to return to in-person meetings very soon.

Upcoming early 2022 meetings:

  • January 18, 7:00 pm, location TBA
  • February 15, 7:00 pm, location TBA
  • March 15, 7:00 pm, location TBA

Season’s Greetings

There are many reasons to celebrate this December and January – as many as there are people in our community and in our land. One of the reasons to celebrate is the enormous diversity we see in Canada and represented right here where we live. So many cultures, with so many celebrations – here are a few that we know of that are celebrated right here in our community. Please let us know of any others that we’ve missed.

Saint Nicholas Day: December 6

Fiesta of Our Lady of Guadalupe: December 12

Saint Lucia Day: December 13

Hanukkah: December 12 to 20

Yule: December 21 to January 1

Kwanzaa: December 26 to January 1

Omisoka: December 31

New Years Day: January 1

Three Kings Day/Epiphany/Orthodox Christmas: January 6

Whatever your celebrations this year, we hope you enjoy a merry, loving, and safe time with family and friends, whether that’s in person or virtually.

We wish you a very happy New Year and a good start to 2022! May it be a year of happiness, good health, and prosperity for each and every one.
