A Message From HH-BH for October

Hounsfield mb

by Val Noonan, Executive Director

September has flown by; the kids are all back to school and the school-year routine is established. The leaves are changing colour and falling, the air is a little crisper, and we are reminded that winter is coming. The community centre is once again welcoming all of our indoor soccer, badminton, and pickleball programs and renters. Our seniors’ program will be starting on October 4 so be sure to drop into the community centre Monday afternoons and join us for seniors’ fitness at 1:00 pm and art classes starting at 2:00 pm.

We would like to thank everyone for coming out and supporting Hounsfield Heights-Briar Hill Community Association at the HH-BH Block Party on September 11, while enjoying a wonderful afternoon with friends and family. We would also like to thank all of the volunteers who made this day so much fun! We couldn’t do it without you! Thank you!

We hope to do more community events in the near future. If you have ideas about an event or activity that you would like to see HH-BH sponsor or support, don’t be shy – let us know.

We are fortunate to have been assigned casino dates on October 12 and 13. Our community association depends on the funds that we earn when we work the casino to support our community programs and events. Recently we were able to make a donation to help support the Briar Hill Playground Project from our casino funds. Without the casino dollars we would not be able to offer all of our drop-in programs or the free community events that are always so enjoyable. We have also been saving our casino dollars with the hope of building an expansion to the current building, where we can provide meeting rooms, studios, and a space that could host special events such as weddings or anniversary celebrations.

And once again, we are asking for your help! We need volunteers for the upcoming casino. Please go to the sign-up link on our website or call the office at 403-282-6634 to volunteer for this year’s casino on October 12 and 13.

I know that it seems that we are always asking for volunteers, and we are. Volunteers are the corner stone of any community association – without volunteers we could not begin to offer the community events and sports programs that we do. Volunteers make the community association and the community a great place to live, work, and play. Please volunteer today. You are essential to our success!

This year Hounsfield Heights-Briar Hill Community Centre will be a polling station for the Municipal Election on October 18. The pandemic has presented its challenges, and as such, there will be safety protocols such as face coverings and social distancing measures in place at the polling station. Be sure to watch your mailboxes for up-to-date voting information.

October is also the month where we can be sure to see many little ghouls and goblins along with princesses and superheroes roaming the streets on Halloween. Please remember to slow down – the trick or treaters will be out in full force.

Hounsfield Heights-Briar Hill Community Association would like to wish everyone a safe and Happy Thanksgiving!
