Huntington Hills – New Book Club Update for June

Looking for a place to share your love of reading? Look no further. The Loosely Bound Book Club in Huntington Hills meets monthly at the community association, or when the weather’s nice, around local chapter organizer, Kimberly Hoeksema’s backyard firepit.

“The relationships and the community we have within the group is phenomenal. We really have a lovely and fun time together at our meetings.”

She says she started the club in 2019 because she loved reading and meeting like-minded individuals within her neighbourhood. With new members able to join at anytime, Kimberly welcomes anyone wanting to participate.

“If you want to meet some awesome women and read some great and interesting books at the same time, consider joining our book club. Also, we would love to have some men join us! It’s not just a women’s club, although that seems to be the main demographic joining. Sometimes my dad joins when he is visiting from out of town – it adds variety to the perspectives, which is always great!”

Having read and discussed many books, some of her favourite 2021/22 reads so far have included The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern, “because of the fantastical nature of the story and the beautiful writing,” and Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet by Jamie Ford – “because of the great writing that draws you in, and the love story set within the context of an important historical event.”

Book clubs like Loosely Bound are often very casual, sometimes including pre-determined topics or free flowing conversation. While they do primarily focus on the books themselves, they’re often also a great place to meet and connect with neighbours. With pre-determined booklists, monthly members can prepare with eBooks, library reads, or look for other used options ahead of time.

Loosely Bound’s upcoming reads include June – The Lincoln Highway by Amor Towles; July – The Rose Code by Kate Quinn; August – State of Terror by Louise Penny and Hilary Rodham Clinton; September – Tokyo Ueno Station by Miri Yu.

The Lincoln Highway by Amor Towles

“In June 1954, eighteen-year-old Emmett Watson is driven home to Nebraska by the warden of the work farm where he has just served a year for involuntary manslaughter. His mother long gone, his father recently deceased, and the family farm foreclosed upon by the bank, Emmett’s intention is to pick up his eight-year-old brother and head west where they can start their lives anew. But when the warden drives away, Emmett discovers that two friends from the work farm have hidden themselves in the trunk of the warden’s car. Together, they have hatched an altogether different plan for Emmett’s future.

Spanning just ten days and told from multiple points of view, Towles’s third novel will satisfy fans of his multi-layered literary styling while providing them an array of new and richly imagined settings, characters, and themes.” [Synopsis and image provided by Goodreads October 5, 2021].
