Nolan Sage Hill’s July President’s Message

In May we held our 9th Annual General Meeting and I’d like to again thank everyone who put their name forward for nomination; a directors list is provided so everyone can get to know our board. The Sage Hill Community Association is a registered non-profit group, and our directors are community volunteers who share the goal of enhancing daily life through social events, programs, sports, and infrastructure. Although COVID has made for some difficult times, we are still here trying our best to make a positive difference in our community. As health restrictions begin to lift, we will see community soccer and sportball return, as well as community events.

Last month, we completed a significant installment on the outdoor rink by bringing in several loads of screened loam, re-graded and repairing much of the berm, and Calgary Parks applied grass seed. If all works out, we should have some signs of grass by now. Hopefully, this final installment will lead to less water consumption, leaks, and soil erosion. I wanted to thank Mark and Julie from Atlas Landscaping Supplies, as well as Wayne and Chris from Anderson builders for the skid steers, manpower, and expertise, and Guy and Sheila from Calgary Parks for the grass seed.

The board has created a new subcommittee, chaired by Director Sarah Jamieson, for the purpose of creating a community garden; the location will not be announced quite yet as we are still working through some permits and petitions. Community gardens are designed for our residents to rent a raised garden bed to grow almost anything they’d like, such as flowers, shrubs, trees, or in some cases food. This project is going to be a multi-year endeavor as we plan to introduce various phases as funding becomes available. In addition to raised planters, we eventually want to see a small orchard, fencing, outdoor art, and a pergola.

Construction season is upon us in Calgary, and in Sage Hill we will see new roads, road twinning, asphalt resurfacing, sidewalk and crosswalk work, deep surface service, new condos, townhouse, and commercial complexes, expansion and opening of the new playground between us and Walmart (which will include a rubberized floor and half basketball court). As summer is the busy season, I wanted to remind everyone of the 311 service and how city services are usually complaint driven. Issues such as unmaintained parks, roads, grasses, trees, animals, and even bylaw complaints and concerns all begin with 311 requests, either over the phone or through the app. As a community volunteer, I tour the community at least once a month and put in all sorts of requests, ranging from tree replacement requests, trash collection, alley regrading, graffiti removal, street sweeping, bylaw issues, road or seasonal maintenance, temporary sign concerns, or any sort of safety concern, and I must urge residents to do the same so we receive the services we fund through property taxes.

Please join us and RonMor developers on Saturday July 10 from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm in the lower section of the Sage Hill Quarter for a “Stampede Food Fair and Fun” event. This event will feature some of YYC’s most popular food trucks, balloon twisters, and live music as we hope to get everyone into the Stampede spirit!

Our next board meeting is July 13 from 7:00 to 8:00 pm via Zoom, and we are not sitting in August.

Thank you,

Ross Utigard
