Happy December Neighbours!

I hope everyone is healthy and well. 2020 has definitely been a different kind of year.

This fall, the Parkdale Community facility was busy re-opening with COVID-19 measures and protocols. We are taking a very diligent approach to the community facility to protect our neighbours and community.

As we continue to monitor and focus on safe operations, we have launched our community rink construction. As mentioned in the spring, we selected our contractor and project manager. This was an exciting step for the PCA.

Construction mobilization began in September and is expected to be done this month. The project has two phases. The full project scope is to replace the outdoor rink, as well as redesign the rink access (the Parkdale Hub) to create an accessible and inclusive environment for sledge hockey players, and people with all abilities. The Parkdale Hub will serve as a gathering place for the community.

Our funding partners – Parks Foundation Calgary, Calgary Flames Foundation, Government of Alberta, and the City of Calgary have generously supported Parkdale’s vision for the project, and the opportunity of setting a new standard for how outdoor community rinks are built – accessible and inclusive. To date we have fully funded Phase 1.

We continue to work towards Phase 2 of the project – the Parkdale Hub, and raising funds to support the accessibility elements. The Parkdale Hub is an absolute necessity to realize the benefit of completing Phase 1. This second phase of the project will include a concrete rink floor, building an external structure that will have accessible washrooms, a garage for a small ice resurfacing machine, access to both parking lots, and a social area to promote community gatherings. The Parkdale Hub will be an amazing space that will allow us to host tournaments, events, and activities for the community to enjoy.

As we learn about grants and funding options, we submit applications. We have been successful to date based on building relationships. As you read this note, if you have any suggestions or ideas for us to consider, please let us know. Our goal is to raise $500,000 for the Parkdale Hub.

Stay tuned for more information about the grand opening of the rink in January. We look forward to celebrating this achievement with our neighbours and community.

Until then, happy holidays – be well and enjoy time safely with family and friends.

Cheers,

Amanda Affonso
