Sandstone-MacEwan’s June President’s Message

Happy Father’s Day!

I must apologize for not sending Happy Mother’s Day wishes last month. I hope your family were able to be creative in recognizing your special day.

The COVID-19 pandemic continues to significantly impact our lives and, as we head into warmer weather and vacation season, we need to remain vigilant in following recommendations from health and government officials. As you know, Calgary continues to lead the numbers throughout the province of those testing positive, so Calgarians need to be extra cautious.

There are excellent initiatives throughout the City to support families in need and I would like to highlight three in our communities.

Firstly, I would like to thank Simons Valley School (SVS) parents for their excellent efforts with a food drive. On April 15th, baskets of food were collected and over $700.00 was raised to donate to the Berkshire Citadel Church Hamper Program. They plan to do the same in May.

Secondly, the Berkshire Citadel Church is extremely busy supporting nearby families through their weekly food hamper program. The SMCA Board was proud to provide a donation towards this much-needed program.

Finally, the SMCA Board is supporting the brown bag lunch program sponsored through Food Finder YYC. Each day between 11:00 am to 1:00 pm, volunteers are handing out bagged lunches to kids in need. Please consider joining them at the sheds near the hockey rink at 355 Sandarac Dr.

We will be getting the planters out soon. This program is quite popular in our communities and we get excellent feedback from you for our efforts. If you can offer to water the plants close to your home that would be extremely helpful. A special thanks to Carolyn Gomez who manages this initiative and you can send her an email at [email protected].

The bike to school day is typically the first Tuesday of June and encourages kids and parents to ride to school. Although schools are closed, why not get the bikes out and go for a bike ride with the kids anyway. Take a photo and send it to us at [email protected].

While the community clean-up is cancelled this year, the SMCA Board is arranging a day for you to pick up compost. Like last year, Big Man Landscaping has offered to collect the compost from the south of Calgary and drop it near the Sandstone Hockey Rink. We will let you know the date soon.
