Deer Ridge’s March Message from the Board

It’s almost spring! The days are getting brighter and longer, and soon they will be getting a bit warmer too. It’s time to start thinking about all those wonderful springtime activities… setting the clocks back, green beer, spring cleaning, and Easter!

Daylight Saving Time

It’s here! The change to Daylight Saving Time is on Sunday, March 14, at 2:00 am. Remember to set your clocks forward an hour before you go to bed. We’ll be rising an hour earlier, but we’ll be rewarded with longer evening daylight.

Valentine’s Day Hearts

A big heartfelt thank you to everyone, young and old, who put hearts in their windows, hearts on their lawns, and hearts on their fences, to help us warm up February in our community! Your amazing designs and all the effort you put into these was, well, heart-warming, and brought smiles to many faces.

St. Patrick’s Day

It’s time to put on the green! Let’s celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. For March 17, put a great big shamrock in your window! Use paper, fabric, felt, window paints, or anything you have at hand – just put a little joy in your window. Let’s see how many shamrocks we can get in the windows of Deer Ridge.

If you’d like to let us know how many shamrocks you’ve counted, or the very biggest one that you saw in our community, find us on our Facebook page and tell us about it. Facebook: Deer Ridge Community Association

Explore Your Street Survey

The City of Calgary has a website that allows you to engage with them on projects around our city. Explore Your Street Survey is one project of particular relevance to us, because it allows you to tell the city about the streets in our neighbourhood – whether they feel safe, well lit, and whether it feels safe to cross the street. The survey asks questions, such as whether you see fun places to play, or art, whether people are hanging out, crosswalks are in the right places, and whether the place seems friendly and accessible.

This survey not only asks thought provoking questions, but it gives you the opportunity to let the City know what changes you would make to the street – and even upload your drawings, photos, or any other observations. Get involved at https://engage.calgary.ca/exploreyourstreet and help make our community a vibrant and joyful place to live.

Spring Cleaning

No word yet on whether we’ll be able to have the big bins out for a community cleanup this year. In the meantime, check on the City of Calgary website to see what can go in your black bin and what won’t be picked up. Remember, they can’t accept hazardous waste, automobile waste, furniture, appliances, mattresses, rolls of carpet, etc., so if you put these items out for pickup, they will stay there until you move them to a recycling facility or to the landfill.

Don’t know what to do with some of the items you want to get rid of? A residential recycling and disposal search tool is available here: https://www.calgary.ca/uep/wrs/what-goes-where/default.html.

The nearest City of Calgary landfill is the Shepard Landfill. It has Throw ‘n’ Go for residential customers to “allow you to safely and conveniently dispose of items that you want to recycle or throw away”. The website has a list of all the items you can dispose of in the landfill for free. https://www.calgary.ca/uep/wrs/landfill-information/landfill-throw-n-go-facilities.html.

The nearest community recycling bins are located at Southcentre, 11011 Bonaventure Dr. SE (Southeast corner of the mall parking lot, by CIBC).

Thanks for helping to keep our community tidy, our back lanes pleasant, and our common areas inviting. Your caring shows.
