Loneliness is the New Smoking

Researchers have found that loneliness is just as lethal as smoking 15 cigarettes per day. As our community aims to prevent the spread of COVID-19, it will be important to our mental and physical health to maintain social connection and relationships. As Riverbend Residents we have access to an extensive pathway system that will allow us to interact with other people while supporting social distancing measures. Your Calgary Public Library Card provides free access to Lynda.com which is a website offering video courses taught by industry experts in software, creative, and business skills. calgarylibrary.ca

Learn a New Language

The travel ban will be lifted eventually! Learn 30 different languages with interactive online courses with the award-winning app: Rosetta Stone. It’s free with your Calgary Public Library card! calgarylibrary.ca

AudioBook and eBook Rentals

The library may be closed, but you can still access books through the Calgary Public Library App and website: calgarylibrary.ca

Companionship and Assistance for Older Adults

GenHelp is an organisation inspired to respond to the issue of seniors’ loneliness and social isolation and have developed an affordable and accessible program to connect seniors with youth. If you are an older adult looking for socialization, house needs or technology support or are a local college or university student looking to for a small way to help and earn an income, contact www.joingenhelp.com.

Online Art Classes and Paint Nights

Programs

Due to COVID-19 pandemic outbreak, all indoor programs taking place at the community centre are cancelled and the community centre will remain closed until further notice.

At the time of this publication, we were given direction to still proceed with outdoor activities.

Activities for Kids

Given our new reality with COVID-19 global pandemic, many of us are staying home with kids and running out of ideas how to keep them occupied while maintaining reasonable screen times. Calgary Public Library also offers a ton of free resources such as: e-books, Bookflix, music, movies, online tutoring etc.

April is National Volunteer Month

Volunteers are at the core of Riverbend Community Association. You could say they are wheels that keep RCA rolling. April 10 to 16 we will be celebrating National Volunteer Week. We would like to welcome our new volunteers:

City of Calgary is conducting a review of Ward Boundaries. We would like to bring our concerns with the proposed revisions to Ward 12 boundaries and how that will affect Riverbend.
