Picnic Potluck

After an absence of two years, we had a Picnic Potluck on Sunday, July 10. The weather cooperated so we were able to enjoy the outdoors. At this kind of event, everyone helps and contributes in some way such as set up, take down, and food. Thanks to everyone.

There was a surprise birthday celebration for me. Thanks to Geraldine Gray who is the chief organizer of these events. She is the person behind me in the picture from this event. Also, thanks to Eilis Hiebert for the big birthday card and two original songs she sang as she played guitar.

Public Seating Pilot

The Public Seating pilot project is now in place at the SW corner of 20 Avenue and 4 Street SW. Go and check it out. See the attached picture. Note the Ukraine colours. Julian Warring spearheaded this project and CBMCA has been the fiscal agent for this project. Thank you to Julian who has been working on this for a couple years. A mural is planned for the fence area behind.

Ukraine Fundraiser

A Ukraine Fundraiser was held in our hall on Saturday, June 25. There was a variety of musicians and artists. If you were not there, you missed a great event. One of the highlights was Cheryle Chagnon – Grey Eyes (Cree knowledge keeper) who spoke of the strong connection between Ukrainians and Indigenous people. Proceeds went to Doctors without Borders. Thanks to Allan Merovitz who organized the event.

Mission Possible 2022

Mission Possible was held on Saturday, June 18. This is our version of Neighbour Day. We were the forerunners of Neighbour Day when we held Mission Possible during the flood cleanup in 2013. There was food and entertainment amongst other things, such as face painting. Mayor Jyoti Gondek and Councillor Walcott attended. Thanks to Melissa Parcels, social director for organizing this event. Thanks to other volunteers who include Brandon Hossack from our community board.

Movies in the Park

This summer, social director Melissa Parcels has arranged for two movies in the park adjacent to the community centre. When you read this, one will have already been held – Friday, July 22 with classic Casablanca. The August movie is another classic – The Goonies – to be held on Friday, August 12. See the poster elsewhere for details.

There was an interesting article in the July 11 edition of the Calgary Herald on Page NP6. It is a story about a 1693 ship wreck that may have inspired The Goonies movie.
