The SCA is having a casino on May 21 and 22, Saturday and Sunday, at Cowboys’ Casino – we are still desperately short of volunteers! The SCA relies on casino funds to pay for all the utilities and without casino funds, it would be difficult to make ends meet. Please, please, please if you are able, go to the SCA website and volunteer for a shift, www.scacalgary.ca. Your support would be greatly appreciated!

On Wednesday, May 11 from 7:00 to 9:00 pm, the SCA is holding their AGM. At the AGM the SCA Board provides an overview of the year, tables audited financial statements and talks about plans for the coming year. It is also where we confirm the election of Board Members and solicit for new Board Members. The SCA is always looking for committed residents to join the Board and you can join the Board as a Director at Large, come to a few meetings and see where you would like to make a contribution. The main commitment is to attend Board Meetings, held on the third Wednesday evening of each month, September to June. I invite you to attend the SCA AGM and to consider joining the SCA Board of Directors, you can nominate yourself from the floor at the AGM or you can contact me directly by email, [email protected].

I am excited that the SCA is planning a return to hosting events for residents! On May 15 from 2:00 to 4:00 pm, the SCA is hosting a Family Movie Matinee. This event is free to all SCA community members in good standing. On May 28, the SCA is facilitating the community Parage of Garage Sales. This is one of my favourite events and I already have boxes and boxes of stuff stacked up waiting for the day. Register on the SCA website or call the office 403-249-1138 to add your address to the Parade! The SCA will do all the advertising and generate a map for shoppers that highlights all the participating households. This event is also free to all households with a SCA membership in good standing. You can renew your membership on the website or by calling the office.

Some future events to look out for include a senior’s dance on June 24 and the SCA Garbage and Recycle Day on July 23.

There are a whole host of regular, spring, and summer programming posted on the SCA website. Take a minute to browse and I bet you find something that would interest you and/or family members.

Just when we were all starting to breath a little easier at the SCA, sadly, we had another break in. Our leaf blower and a variety of tools were stolen. COVID has left the SCA on a tight budget and past incidences (flood and break ins) have had an impact on the SCA insurance premiums. It saddens me that thieves target an already vulnerable public facility. The good news is that we have surveillance footage of the thieves, and we are working with the City of Calgary Police to find the culprits. Stay tuned because the surveillance footage may be posted on Facebook. If you have any information or ever see suspicious activity at or around the SCA please call the City of Calgary Police – they can’t help us if we don’t keep them informed.

The moose (actually a few different moose, including a large bull moose) are back in the urban forest spaces (and some backyards) in our community. Although quite calm, if you see a moose, please keep your dogs on leash and maintain a normal level of noise – don’t sneak up on them but also don’t try and startle them away – they are just as likely to run at you as away from you. It is one of the real delights of our community that we share these spaces with a variety of wildlife. The urban forests are ours to share, so enter these spaces with respect and common sense.

It is spring – I can see some of my perennials popping up and through all the deadfall in my flower beds. However, it is still a little early to be clearing all the deadfall from your flower beds, lady bugs and bees are still sleeping. These beneficial bugs will help to keep all the unwanted pests out of our gardens, so please don’t start your garden clean up until evening temperatures are consistently above zero.

I look forward to seeing some new faces at the SCA AGM, come see what we are all about and hopefully we can tempt you into participating.

Maureen Smith – SCA President
