As your provincial representative, I hear about rising grocery prices and electricity bills, jobs, uncertainty in our energy sector, the environment and wildfires, and even the impact of a trade war. It is clear to me that global events are being felt close to home. This isn’t about tariffs only – it’s about who we are as a country from coast to coast.
I hear from many Albertans that they love both Canada and our beautiful province. I know how deeply proud Albertans are to be Canadian. That pride comes with a strong sense of responsibility to look out for one another, stand together in challenging times, and protect Canada.
Alberta brings incredible value to Canada. We gain from our participation within confederation – health care transfers under the Canada Health Act, the Canada Pension Plan, the great Canadian passport, the RCMP, the military, and education supports – not to mention our national pride.
The forces threatening an Alberta separation from Canada are troubling. Could Alberta have a better deal within Confederation? Most likely, and we can engage in firm negotiations while maintaining a stable investment and jobs environment in our province. Talk of separation is deeply out-of-step with where the country is headed, as provinces look to drop interprovincial trade barriers. We need a trade strategy that puts Canadians first – one that protects our values and advances prosperity.
I love Canada. I love Alberta. That’s what I hear from many Albertans. This country is not perfect, and we have challenges as a nation, but it is so worth fighting for. Every single day.
Be loud, be proud, and raise your Albertan and Canadian flags.
