Economic Growth Council
Since the fall I have Chaired an Economic Growth Council tasked to identify the root causes of Canada’s economic stagnation and propose practical solutions to unleash the country’s full economic potential and bring it back from its position as the economic laggard of the developed world.
Over the past decade, Canada has experienced weak economic growth, declining productivity, a rising cost of living, and lower real incomes for workers. People are paying the price, as wages fail to keep up with expenses, leaving an entire generation unable to afford homes or even basic necessities like food, causing food bank usage to skyrocket.
This group consists of business leaders from across the country, who represent industry sectors that are often not heard from, and I am helped by MP Gaétan Malette and former MP Rick Perkins.
The task is to ensure we hear from business leaders, and from their insight on doing business in Canada, and the red tape that impacts their industry draft practical policy changes that can get Canada back on track. Canada has immense potential, but the government needs to stop placing barriers in the way of economic progress; and as Canadians we need to see these changes as the bitter medicine that a patient needs to recover.
Canada must admit that our traditional trade patterns, and the decades of stability from them are no longer there. I hope the policies that I will introduce will be implemented by this Liberal government so that the promise of Canada can be there for the next generation, as it was for ours.
