While Christmas often takes the spotlight here in Canada, many other holidays are also celebrated around the world this month—each with its own unique customs and stories.
• Hanukkah – Also known as the Festival of Lights, Hanukkah is an eight-day Jewish celebration that usually falls in December. Families light the menorah, enjoy traditional foods like latkes (potato pancakes), and play dreidel games together.
• Kwanzaa – Beginning on December 26, Kwanzaa is a week-long celebration that honours African heritage and culture. Each day focuses on one of seven principles, such as unity, creativity, and faith, often marked with music, storytelling, and shared meals.
• Islamic Observances – While no major Muslim holidays usually fall in December, Islamic celebrations such as Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha move through the calendar each year based on the lunar cycle. These holy days are times of prayer, gratitude, generosity, and connection with family and community. Many Muslim families also take part in local charity and interfaith events during the winter season, sharing in the spirit of peace and togetherness.
• Diwali (sometimes in November or December) – The Hindu Festival of Lights celebrates the victory of light over darkness. Homes are decorated with diyas (oil lamps) and colourful rangoli patterns, creating a joyful, welcoming glow.
• Winter Solstice – On December 21, many cultures recognize the shortest day of the year with traditions that honour nature, reflection, and renewal.
• New Year’s Eve – As December closes, people everywhere gather to celebrate fresh beginnings, share resolutions, and look forward to a new year filled with hope.
