Diamond Cove Homeowners Association President’s Message for April

Queensland cn

Dear Diamond Cove Homeowners,

Spring is officially here! After what felt like a long winter, we can finally enjoy the longer days, fresh air, and the return of outdoor activities. With that in mind, I’d like to take this opportunity to share some important updates about our community and encourage you to get involved in making Diamond Cove an even better place to live.

Annual General Meeting – Your Voice Matters!

First and foremost, all homeowners are invited to our Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Wednesday, April 23 at 6:30 pm at the Queensland Community Hall. This is one of the most important meetings of the year, as it allows us to discuss the current and future direction of our community, make key decisions, and elect our board members.

Every homeowner has a vote at the AGM, and your participation is critical in shaping the future of our neighbourhood. This year, one of the items on the agenda will be voting on the community tax levy for the following year. The levy directly impacts what improvements we can provide as a community. This is your opportunity to have a say in how we allocate resources and ensure we continue to support initiatives that benefit all residents.

Looking for New Board Members – Get Involved!

We are also looking for new board members to join the Diamond Cove Homeowners Association. If you care about your community and want to make a difference, we would love to have you on board. The commitment is relatively light — attending meetings and helping to coordinate community activities — but the impact is significant. A strong, engaged board helps ensure our neighbourhood remains safe, welcoming, and well-maintained.

If you’re interested in joining the board or would like more information about what’s involved, please reach out. Even if you’re unable to commit as a full-time board member, there are plenty of opportunities to volunteer in smaller ways throughout the year. Your skills, ideas, and passion can help shape the future of Diamond Cove!

Fundraising and Volunteer Opportunities

In addition to new board members, we are also looking for volunteers and suggestions for fundraising efforts. Our ability to host community events, maintain public spaces, and fund neighbourhood projects depends on the support of our residents. If you have fundraising ideas or are willing to lend a hand, we would love to hear from you.

Fundraising doesn’t have to be a big commitment — it could be as simple as helping coordinate a bottle drive, setting up an event, or assisting with sponsorship outreach. Every little bit helps!

Spring Cleanup – Let’s Keep Diamond Cove Beautiful

As the snow melts, we’ve all noticed the unfortunate accumulation of garbage throughout the community. It’s no one’s favourite chore, but a little effort from each of us will go a long way in keeping Diamond Cove clean and beautiful. Whether it’s in front of your home, in our green spaces, or along pathways, please take a few moments to pick up any litter you see.

A special request to dog owners: The off-leash area between Diamond Cove and Deer Run is becoming increasingly problematic due to pet waste. Please remember to pick up after your pets. Not only is it unpleasant for other residents, but it also attracts wildlife and creates health hazards. This is a shared space, and we all need to do our part to keep it clean and safe for everyone.

Time for Fence Repairs and Painting

Spring is also the perfect time to inspect your fences and plan for necessary repairs or painting. Maintaining fences helps keep our neighbourhood looking great and ensures they last for years to come.

A reminder that for properties requiring wood fencing, the exterior side of all fences must be painted “Diamond Cove White” to maintain a consistent and clean aesthetic throughout the community. For properties with chain-link fencing, this should remain as-is to align with community standards.

Fencing is the responsibility of each homeowner, so please take some time this season to assess your fence and make any necessary repairs or updates. You can easily obtain Diamond Cove White paint from Benjamin Moore Midnapore on Bannister Road — just ask for it by name! A fresh coat of paint or minor repairs can make a big difference in keeping our neighbourhood looking well-maintained.

Understanding Property Taxes – A Message from Councillor Peter Demong

There has been some confusion regarding property tax increases, and I’d like to take a moment to clarify how taxes are calculated, thanks to information shared by our Ward 14 Councillor, Peter Demong.

Many people assume that if their property value increases, the City automatically collects more taxes. However, that is not the case. Property taxes are determined by two main factors:

1. The City’s budget, which is set by City Council based on financial needs.

2. Your assessed property value, particularly how it changes relative to other properties in Calgary.

Think of it like a pie: The City sets the total “size” of the tax revenue needed, and your individual property assessment determines how much of that pie you pay. If your property value has increased significantly compared to others, your share of taxes may increase, even if the overall budget remains the same.

If you’d like to learn more about how property taxes are determined and where your money goes, I encourage you to visit calgary.ca/ourfinances for more details.

Save the Date – Community Garage Sale Returns!

We are thrilled to announce that Royal LePage Benchmark has once again committed to sponsoring our Diamond Cove Community Garage Sale, happening on September 6, 2025!

This annual event is a fantastic opportunity to declutter, meet your neighbours, and find some great bargains. Whether you’re looking to sell items, hunt for treasures, or simply enjoy the community atmosphere, this is an event you won’t want to miss. Start setting aside your items now!

Other Spring Tips and Reminders

With the change in season, here are a few other reminders to help keep our community running smoothly:

• Yard Maintenance: Warmer weather means it’s time for spring yard cleanup. Keeping your property tidy not only enhances curb appeal but also helps prevent pests and weeds from spreading.

• Tree Pruning and Sidewalks: If you have trees near sidewalks, please ensure branches are trimmed back to avoid obstructing walkways.

• Biking and Walking Safety: More people will be out enjoying the warmer weather, so please be mindful of pedestrians and cyclists when driving through the neighbourhood. Likewise, if you’re biking, remember to wear a helmet and follow traffic rules.

Final Thoughts

Spring is a season of renewal, and it’s a great time to reconnect as a community. Whether it’s attending the AGM, joining the board, helping with fundraising, picking up litter, repairing fences, or simply being a considerate neighbour, your involvement makes a difference.

I hope to see many of you at the AGM on April 23 and encourage you to reach out if you have any questions or ideas. Thank you for being a part of Diamond Cove — we are stronger together!

Warm regards,

Sonia Dantu
