The 41st annual De Winton Canada Day breakfast was a huge success with well over 400 people in attendance this year. We are so blessed to live in a community with people who just step up to make this annual event such a special occasion for all of us in the community. You could see that our attendees loved sitting down, catching up with old friends and family, listening to the music while enjoying their breakfast, watching their children or grandchildren play, or just running around and having some fun. We were so lucky to have absolutely perfect weather: beautiful sunshine with a soft breeze to keep things cool.

Beyond the always delicious breakfast of pancakes, ham and sausages prepared perfectly by our own grill masters, there were plenty of activities for kids of all ages. The festivities included a face painting station for the kids, where Kay Pike (a local favourite) along with Lillian, Ella, and Scotia created works of art on over 60 children who wanted a new look for the day. Nobody went away disappointed.

We also got to test out all of the fantastic sporting equipment that was recently added to the hall. Our youth volunteers guided the kids (and the adults) to try out Canada Cornhole, hula-hooping, and Spike Ball. A lively game of soccer engaged some of the older youths as well. It was really great to see a whole new generation of attendees come out to play for the morning.

Music, including a sing along version of our national anthem, was provided by Kevin from The Eagle 100.9 who offered just the right atmosphere for an outdoor event.

Foothills councillor Alan Alger arranged for the Foothills Fire Department to bring a bunch of fancy fire trucks. The kids and adults alike enjoyed learning about them and getting their pictures taken in them. So shiny!

There were some equally shiny cars of many vintages in our mini show and shine with both old and original and newly souped-up versions making an appearance.

This is DCA’s biggest event and it requires a large contingent of volunteers to pull it off. There are event planners, ham cookers, coffee makers, table setters, flapjack flippers, parking co-ordinators, ticket sellers, entertainers, and jack-of-all-traders; we simply couldn’t do it without them. Thank you so much to all of our volunteers for taking the time out of your busy days to help us with this event.

Mark your calendars for next year.
