Laurie has called Ranchlands home since 2013. She has served Ranchlands in many ways, like through her involvement in public services during the census, the election for all three levels of government, and her journey with Girl Guides of Canada since 2017. With her interdisciplinary experience and multi-cultural background, Laurie strives to dedicate herself to developing and sustaining a great living environment for all Ranchlands residents to feel included, inspired, and proud of our community.
Fun Facts about Laurie
Furry Friends: I am neither a cat person nor a dog person – I am an animal person! I have two four-year-old cats, Apollo, and Hercules, who give awesome little-foot massages and play fun fetches. Their 16-year-old big sister, Galaxy and I have delivered creature feature programs for various communities, including my girl guides which is always a highlight.
Festive Faves: I just attended Jane’s Walk in Ranchlands for the first time, and I met new people and got to know our neighbourhood better. It is celebrated on the first Sunday of May every year so I will be looking forward to it next year. Join in! I also can’t wait to return to Prince’s Island Park for my 16th visit to Calgary Folk Music Festival – a place to enjoy music, run into friends, and dance in a magical atmosphere.
Signature Dishes: My Walnut-Chocolate-Chip-Banana Bread, which I bake and give to people to express my gratitude and best wishes, is a big hit with my friends. My Kung Pao Chicken has won me an “exceptional cook” compliment from colleagues I traveled with during our whooping crane conservation journey through the United States. On the same trip, I learned how to make dumplings from scratch, and they were better than the ones served at the restaurant in the Chinatown of Washington DC.
Pay It Forward: I pay it forward through volunteering, speaking up, and standing up. I want to make the world a better place. Volunteering helps me learn, grow, and enjoy life individually and with like-minded friends and family. By speaking and standing up, for example against bullying and discrimination, I find I can cultivate thoughts and actions for myself, my cohorts, and the future generation, and help change happen.
Travel Tales: Taiwan, where I was born and raised, is my most frequent travel destination. I enjoy creating sweet memories with my beloved family and friends and reconnecting with the island. I also love Vancouver Island, probably because I spent two summers in Bamfield studying Marine Science and enjoying the beautiful Northern Pacific Ocean shore.
