We are continuing to build a kinder, more neighbourly world starting right here in Shawnee Evergreen. Let’s support each other in taking action and looking for positive ways forward each day.
Community Campfires
The Community Campfire series kicked-off in December and January. These much-loved outdoor gatherings provide an opportunity to connect with friends and neighbours. Each month, a mix of familiar faces and newcomers enjoy the fabulous live music, as well as many hotdogs, marshmallows and cups of hot chocolate.
Plan to attend upcoming campfires from 4:00 to 6:00 pm on the fourth Saturday of the month in February, March, and April. The upcoming campfire locations are yet to be determined. For location information, subscribe to our e-newsletter, follow SECA’s Facebook or Instagram, and/or watch for posters at our Little Free Libraries or on the A-frame displays in parks.
Volunteers Are Needed
We continue to look to our very capable residents to volunteer on our task teams, committees, and on the board of directors. Let us know how you would like to get involved and we’ll find a role to fit. Please reach out to [email protected] to start the conversation.
Anecdotally, and based on newsletter and social media engagement, the work of the Planning and Development Committee is valued by residents. However, this interest has not resulted in working committee participation. If you value the advocacy work related to the Transitional Housing project in Shawnee Slopes and the Calgary Plan (a.k.a. city-wide rezoning – part two), please reach out to our President. If the committee does not get additional support from resident volunteers, the committee’s scope and future are at risk.
Little Free Libraries continue to be short of books. If you have used books to donate, especially children’s books, please email [email protected] to arrange pickup.
SECA’s Casino Event is scheduled for June 22 to 23, 2025, at the nearby Deerfoot Inn & Casino. Resident volunteers are needed to fill 36 volunteer shifts over the two-day event. Please email [email protected] to learn more about how you can be a part of this fun and very valuable fundraising event.
55+ Seniors Programs
55+ Seniors Programs continue to be warmly received. Thanks to the Committee and Volunteer Corps supporting the programs. Please see our program website https://bit.ly/seca55 for more details. For questions, please email [email protected] or phone 403-333-9982.
Children’s Programs
Children’s Programs are on ‘life support’. We have funding and contractors booked. We require volunteers to support the programs. Parent or grandparent volunteers are needed to sustain these programs, or they will not continue.
Placemaking Ideas
The portfolio of Placemaking ideas gathered through the engagement programs of last summer are being developed into a multi-year plan with several projects coming to the board for funding discussions in March for implementation over the coming year and beyond.
More volunteers are needed to advance the Placemaking Projects. Get involved in this impactful work by emailing [email protected] to let us know what skills, experience, and time you can contribute.
Community Garden
The Garden Club is progressing in their plans to build a Community Garden. Get involved by emailing [email protected].
