Movement in May
Our community continues to be engaged, is supported well by the City, has very low crime rates, and many activities going on. Soon spring sports programs will be underway – watch out for the excited children with spring fever as they play in our neighbourhood.
Our upcoming activities include a Jane’s Walk and a Spring Hunt, and of course our fundraising casino early in June.
Janes’ Walk will happen on May 3 (which may be in the past as you read this). We will begin at the community hall at 1:00 pm. We will take a walk for about an hour around the community, exploring some of the interesting places in Ranchlands. Jane’s Walk is an annual festival of free, community-led walking conversations inspired by urbanist and writer Jane Jacobs. On the first weekend of May every year, Jane’s Walk festivals take place in hundreds of cities around the world. This event encourages people to share stories about their neighbourhoods, discover unseen aspects of their communities, and use walking as a way to connect with their neighbours.
Our neighborhood Cleanup Day will happen in the fall – once we have the dates confirmed with the City of Calgary and the other support groups, we will be advertising it. There will also be a Parade of Garage Sales coming June 14. Registration and routes will be available early in June.
Again, we will have a fun and challenging Spring Hunt planned – the details and theme will be promoted through our social media channels. We enjoy all the people scouring the neighbourhood, getting to know our area, and hopefully meeting neighbours along the way.
The Annual Neighbour Day celebration will be on Saturday, June 21 from 2:00 to 5:30 pm at the community hall. We will have family-friendly activities along with a space friendly for adults to mix and mingle. We look forward to meeting many of you there.
The City of Calgary is undertaking an initiative called the “Branching out Tree Program”. Calgary’s tree canopy coverage is currently at 8.25%, this includes trees planted on both public and private property. The City is working to grow and expand our tree canopy coverage to 16%. You can help through the annual Branching Out program. Trees are provided at no cost by the City of Calgary. NW registration opened on April 29!
Finally, our casino – we have had a wonderful response of volunteers to support us. We are still inviting you to hang out with fellow Ranchlanders and board members on Friday, June 6 and Saturday, June 7. If you have never volunteered at a casino, please feel free to email me at [email protected] and I will be happy to chat with you about the roles.
