Though this past season is now a distant memory; the Hockey, Pleasure, and Kiddie rinks were said to be amongst the best Outdoor Ice Rink (ODR) conditions in recent memory. The BCA and your Braeside Ice Guardians (BIG) hope you or someone you know took advantage and strapped on some skates for a casual skate or what was at times some intense shinny.

From Opening Day on December 1, until the third week of February, BIG put in about 275 hours building and maintaining this great free Braeside outdoor amenity. The season was short and was met with huge snow early on, a lot of sun, lots of wind (pinecones and needles were our nemesis), and many good days lost to extreme cold…. but there were still some diehards.

The Christmas break was fabulous this year though, and there were daily games of shinny, with at times more than enough players to sub in/out. During the holiday break, we were happy and proud to informally welcome a young 16-year-old goalie from Las Vegas who was surprised by his parents, for his birthday, with a trip to Alberta for a goalie camp in Calgary. His mom had reached out to us, via Facebook, about helping Trenton experience a dream of his – playing on an ODR for his first time. He played two afternoons, making new friends and creating great memories.

The BIG crew had a very successful season, working in sometimes extreme cold and dark, but we enjoyed ourselves; all the while hoping we provided a place for you to enjoy. A huge thank you to the 24/25 BIG crew: Bill C., Kevin M., Luke M., Chris M., Luke B., Travis F., and Doug G.

If you want to be a crew member next season, stay tuned, or email [email protected].
