Celebrating Our Neighbourhood in June
As we prepare to celebrate another event with our neighbours, it is worthwhile noting some of the interesting facts about the history of Ranchlands.
Did you know…
During the last ice age, 15,000 years ago, ice sheets wore away the rock and gravel. The Ranchlands Hills Parks plan set aside land to maintain a sense of ‘ranch land’ for residents in the surrounding community. The park preserves the geological features called “knobs and kettles”. Much of northwest Calgary was once a field of knobs and kettles but Ranchlands Park is among the last remnants left in a natural state. The plan for Ranchlands was drafted in 1976 as part of the Urban development plan. The site is significant because this park holds pathways, trails, soccer fields, ball diamonds, tennis courts, and the Ranchlands and St. Rita Elementary Schools.
On May 5, we hosted a Jane’s Walk – this organization facilitates neighbourhood walks all over North America for people interested in exploring our spaces with others. We had 15 people take part in our “Round-Up Ranchlands” event. As we walked 2.5 kms of pathway, we observed some of the lovely parts of Ranchlands, including great parks and green spaces. We finished on the top of the Ranchlands Hill enjoying the view in all directions.
We have also noted some areas that need some care and attention that were discussed at our May board meeting. The board will have a retreat this July to go through areas that can be done simply with minimal cost and big projects that we will engage the City and apply for any grants. If you have an area that you know is a problem, please let us know through the office at [email protected] or email me at [email protected].
Upcoming events to support keeping our personal and community spaces looking great:
• There will be a Parade of Garage Sales on June 14. Registration and routes will be available early in June. Our neighbourhood Cleanup Day will happen August 23. More information will be on our website and Facebook page.
• As a reminder, our annual Neighbour Day celebration will be Saturday, June 21 from 2:00 to 5:30 pm at the community hall. We will have family-friendly activities along with a space friendly for adults to mix and mingle. We look forward to meeting many of you there.
