Things To Know in the Cove

As we welcome the warmth of summer, it’s the perfect time to prepare your gardens and homes for the season ahead. Here are some helpful tips for water-wise gardening, pollinator support, home maintenance, and staying up to date with City of Calgary regulations if you have outdoor building plans.

Water-Wise Gardening: Drought-Tolerant Plants

With potential water restrictions this summer, consider adding these hardy, low-water plants to your garden:

• Yarrow – Tough and beautiful, with fern-like leaves and bright blooms.

• False Sunflower – A sunny favourite that thrives in Calgary’s dry climate.

• Lavender – Fragrant and bee-friendly, perfect for borders or containers.

• Catmint – Aromatic and easy-going, with long-lasting purple flowers.

Tip: Add mulch to your garden beds to retain moisture and reduce watering needs.

Save Water This Summer

Help conserve water (and save on your bill!) with these smart strategies:

• Water early or late in the day to avoid evaporation.

• Install a rain barrel to collect and reuse rainwater.

• Improve your soil with compost to increase water retention.

• Group plants with similar water needs together.

Every drop counts – and it helps your garden thrive more efficiently.

Flowers That Attract Bees and Butterflies

Support pollinators with these vibrant, bee-loving plants:

• Echinacea (Coneflower) – A bold summer bloomer.

• Zinnias – Bright, cheerful, and easy to grow.

• Bee Balm – Loved by hummingbirds and bees alike.

• Blanket Flower – A tough native wildflower that bees adore.

Bonus: These blooms add colour and life to your yard all season long!

Easy DIY Wasp Trap that Really Works!

Got wasps? Try this natural and effective trap:

You’ll need:

• 1 cup water

• ½ cup apple cider vinegar

• 1 tbsp sugar

• A few drops of dish soap

Directions: Mix all ingredients in a shallow dish and place it where wasps are active. The sweet smell attracts them, and the soap breaks the water tension, causing them to sink.

Safe, simple, and chemical-free!

Have Poly B Pipes? Time to Replace Them

Homes built between the late 1970s and mid-1990s may have Poly B (polybutylene) piping, a material known to fail over time.

Why replace it?

• Prevent leaks and costly water damage

• Improve water quality

• Avoid insurance issues

• Increase resale value

Talk to a licensed plumber about upgrading to modern piping. Talk to your insurance provider if you still have Poly B about coverage or additional endorsements.

Know the Rules: Calgary Residential Regulations

Fence Heights:

• Front yard: max 1.2 m (4 ft)

• Back yard: max 2 m (6.5 ft)

• Gates/structures: max 2.5 m (8.2 ft)

Thinking of digging? Always contact Utility Safety Partners at 1-800-242-3447 or visit utilitysafety.ca before you dig — it’s free and helps avoid costly damage.

Deck Projects: Permits may be required if your deck is:

• Over 1.5 m high

• Close to your property line

• Encroaching on setback areas

Please Slow Down in Our Community!

We’d like to remind everyone again to drive carefully and respect the speed limits in Diamond Cove. Too many vehicles are still speeding through the neighbourhood and not stopping at the crosswalks. This is especially dangerous with more children, pets, and neighbours out walking, biking, and enjoying the warm weather. Let’s all do our part to keep our streets safe for everyone, slow down and stay alert.

Help Keep Our Community Clean

Our beautiful neighbourhood looks even better when it’s litter-free! On windy days, especially on Blue Bin collection day, recycling and garbage can easily blow across streets and yards. If you see litter in the area, even if it’s not yours, please take a moment to pick it up. Every little bit helps keep Diamond Cove clean, welcoming, and environmentally friendly. Let’s work together to show pride in our community!

Garage Sale

Our much-anticipated annual Garage Sale is back on Saturday, September 6 proudly sponsored once again by Royal LePage’s Brenda Field and Dorothea Sautter. It’s a great community event and the perfect opportunity to turn your clutter into cash. While more details on registration and logistics will be shared on our Facebook page soon, now’s a great time to start decluttering. As we head into June, take a look around, what can you live without? Let it go and get ready to join the fun!

Wishing you all a wonderful summer!

Warm regards,

Sonia Dantu
