Hawkwood’s President’s Message for July

Hello Hawkwood!

Summer is here, school is out, and Hawkwood kids of all ages will be spending more time in the community. As more of us get outdoors to enjoy the many walking paths, green spaces, and play parks around the neighbourhood, now is a good time to review traffic safety.

Studies have found that a significant percentage of traffic accidents occur close to home, and about one-third occur within a three-minute drive of home. According to the research, we tend to be less attentive drivers when we are on familiar roads. This is concerning from a community perspective, as inattentive driving could lead to an accident that harms a neighbour or family member. To keep our community safe, I encourage drivers to:

• Follow the posted speed limits. Hawkwood has many playground zones, and the 30 km/h limit is in effect from 7:30 am to 9:00 pm.

• Stay alert and watch for pedestrians.

• Share the road with cyclists.

• Be kind to your neighbours.

As pedestrians, we are also responsible for contributing to traffic safety, which includes:

• Crossing streets safely, at a corner or intersection.

• Watching for turning vehicles.

• Making eye contact with drivers.

• Being kind to your neighbours.

I wish everyone a fun, relaxing, and safe summer! Please email me at [email protected] if you have any questions, comments, or want to learn more about the HCA!

In gratitude and kindness,

Michele del Valle
