Discovery Ridge’s Letter from the Board for August

DiscoveryRidge cn

We hope that all our friends and neighbours are making the most of the summer this year. We will keep our comments shorter this month, but we wanted to remind you that the DRCA is doing its best to deliver fun to our community this summer. Check out the photos in this issue showing highlights from the Stampede Roundup back in June. It was a great success despite being rescheduled and the threat of storm clouds, thankfully the sunshine won out.

Music in The Park

Mark your calendars for Saturday, September 6—it’s time for Music in the Park!

Pack a chair or blanket and gather with friends and family for a fun-filled afternoon. Enjoy live music, a beer/wine garden, and tasty bites from local food trucks. This event is always such a great way to enjoy the day and the beautiful neighbourhood that is Discovery Ridge. We can’t wait to see you there!

Farm Stand

Please get out to visit the group from Shirley’s Greenhouse each Saturday from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm this summer. Support this local Farm Stand that will be set up in the parking lot at the recreation facility, across from the Bottle Shack while we still have this special opportunity in our back yard.

Green Cart Facts and Tips

Food and yard waste collected through the Green Cart program is turned into nutrient-rich compost for use by farmers, gardeners, and landscapers. If you don’t separate your food scraps from your garbage it will end up buried in the landfill where it doesn’t break down or turn into soil. Separating your food scraps in your green bin makes a big difference.

Follow these tips for separating food scraps and using your green cart:

• Remove food from its packaging before putting it in your green cart.

• Use a kitchen pail or reuse any container with a lid (like an ice cream bucket) to store food scraps until you throw them in your green cart.

• You can control odours and keep your cart clean by using a certified compostable bag, paper bag or newspaper liner in your kitchen pail.

• Use a small amount of baking soda in your kitchen pail to prevent odours.
