Contributing to Your School Community

by Sofia N., a volunteer with the Edgemont Youth Press

The start of a new school year. From excitement to anxiety, this time of year is full of emotions. However, one of the ways to utilize these feelings for good is to get involved in your school community. Not only does involvement in your school allow you to pursue your passions, gain new skills and opportunities and learn tons – but it also allows you to meet new people and cultivate meaningful connections. Here’s some ways you can get involved in your school!

Firstly, joining clubs. For many students, it is a great way to either gain extra experience in an area you are passionate about or learn about something that you may develop a strong passion for. Personally, this last year, I was able to join a number of new clubs that focused on a variety of areas from volunteering to public speaking. Within these clubs, I learned so much about the world around me, had amazing opportunities, and met like-minded people. If your school doesn’t have a club you’d be interested in, try talking to administration about starting your very own!

Next, volunteering for events. Helping out with different events around school such as fundraisers, dances, and orientations exposes you to new surroundings and allows you to build the skills necessary to organize and execute large events. In the future, these connections and skills could become invaluable.

Lastly, it is always important to engage in activities that push you outside of your comfort zone. A couple of years ago, I decided to join the basketball team at my school. As someone with zero experience at a very beginner skill level, it was intimidating to say the least. Yet, with every early morning practice and every mistake made on the court, I was able to learn skills I never thought I would, meet people I am still friends with today, and grow so much as an individual.

At the end of the day, school, and especially the beginning of a new year, can be overwhelming and difficult. Getting involved in your community allows you to build skills, find new passions, and create long-lasting relationships – whether it be with peers, mentors, or teachers. So, join some clubs, volunteer for events, and maybe even push yourself to try something new so you can make this school year your best one yet.
