Enjoying Mahogany’s Pathways Safely: A Quick Guide for Cyclists and E-Scooter Riders

As we enjoy these beautiful late-summer days on our community’s lakeside pathways, let’s work together to ensure everyone has a safe and enjoyable experience. Whether you’re cycling or using an e-scooter, a little awareness goes a long way.

Here’s a quick refresher on the City of Calgary’s bylaws and safety tips to help us all share the path responsibly.

Cyclists

• Mind your speed: Max 20 km/h on pathways (unless posted otherwise).

• Pass with care: Give a bell ring or a friendly “passing on your left” before overtaking.

• No dogs while cycling: Don’t ride with a leashed dog on pathways.

Is Your Bike Ride-Ready?

Before you head out, make sure you have:

• At least one working brake and a bell or horn.

• At dawn, dusk, or night:

• White headlight (one or two), red taillight, and a red rear reflector.

Helmets (Quick Clarity)

• Pedal bikes: Helmets are required for riders and passengers under 18.

• E-bikes (power-assist): Helmets are required for all ages (an approved bicycle helmet is acceptable under the provincial Registrar’s exemption).

E-Scooter Riders

• Yield to pedestrians on sidewalks and pathways—slow down and give space.

• Signal your pass with the bell.

• Keep to 20 km/h on pathways.

Thanks for doing your part to keep our pathways safe for all neighbours—here’s to a wonderful (and safe) start to fall!
