ELM Report for November

What a beautiful start to our fall season it has been so far! The flowers in the planters and parks in Edgemont still look fabulous, especially considering that this is the beginning of October. By the time you read this article, you hopefully have had a chance to get some cuttings of the geraniums with their vivid colours before the flowers were removed by Foothills, our landscaping contractor! By now, Foothills will have cleaned up the summer displays, and the planters will be ready to receive their winter displays, which are once more designed and looked after by Edenscapes. In the meantime, the ELM team hereby extends a huge thank you to Shari, our ELM coordinator, and Foothills Landscaping for doing a fabulous job keeping our community looking beautiful during the summer months.

Updates of ELM projects in the community include having some success in our continuous battle with the pocket gophers, by planting some ornamental onions in the biggest problem areas. Hopefully, we can continue this experiment successfully next summer using this environmental approach!

The Edenwold Drive/Edgemont Boulevard bus stop bed was revamped, and we added two self-watering planters to the existing flower bed, providing a lot more colour by this bus stop.

Foothills Landscaping assessed the work done on the lilacs earlier this season along Edenwold Drive near the shopping centre and replaced a couple of the new lilacs as they had not survived the transplant very well. We may add some mulch in this area to keep in the moisture.

Levelling of some of the planters using gravel appears to be a successful solution to the levelling challenges of some of the planters.

The Naturalization project on Edgemont Boulevard near the ECA building will still undergo one round of weed pulling on October 16. A big thank you to all the volunteers that have been helping us make this project successful.

Sadly, you cannot win all battles, and our daffodil project did not create quite the big yellow wave we had hoped. However, we have positive expectations for next season when the bulbs have had a chance to settle into their new environment.

Lastly, the ELM team has determined that the Special Tax Levy, which helps fund the ELM program, does not need an increase for the 2026 tax year, so it will remain at $86.52 per year for each Edgemont residential property. As mentioned in the previous newsletter, there will not be a Reaffirmation Vote this year as the city is conducting a full review of the Special Tax Levy program and requested our community to hold off with the vote until they have completed their review.
