A warm holiday drink bursting with gingerbread spices—perfect for winter evenings
When the snow is falling and the holidays are in full swing, there’s nothing more comforting than a steaming mug of homemade hot chocolate. This Gingerbread Hot Chocolate blends rich cocoa with warm spices—ginger, cinnamon, nutmeg, and molasses—for a nostalgic Christmas flavour that tastes like a hug in a mug.
Ingredients
• 2 cups milk (or any dairy-free milk)
• 2 tbsp cocoa powder
• 2 tbsp brown sugar
• 1 tbsp molasses
• ¼ tsp ground ginger
• ½ tsp ground cinnamon
• Pinch of nutmeg
• ¼ tsp vanilla extract
• Pinch of salt
• Whipped cream (optional topping)
• Crushed gingerbread cookies or cinnamon for garnish
Instructions
1. Warm the milk – In a small saucepan, heat the milk over medium heat until steaming (but not boiling).
2. Add cocoa and spices – Whisk in the cocoa powder, brown sugar, molasses, ginger, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt until smooth.
3. Let it simmer – Reduce heat slightly and simmer for 2 to 3 minutes, whisking occasionally. The molasses will deepen the flavour and thicken the drink slightly.
4. Finish with vanilla – Remove from heat and stir in vanilla extract.
5. Serve – Pour into two mugs. Top with whipped cream, then sprinkle crushed gingerbread or cinnamon on top.
