Even when they look frozen, storm ponds, rivers, waterways, and the Glenmore Reservoir are never safe for walking, skating, or playing on. With water constantly moving beneath the surface and carrying sediment and runoff, the ice can weaken without warning.
Ice Safety Tips
Never walk, skate, or play on storm ponds. Instead, stay on nearby pathways.
Obey posted signs around all bodies of water.
Choose safe, designated spots for winter fun at calgary.ca/winteractivities and calgary.ca/rinks.
Report activity on storm ponds by calling 3-1-1.
If you see someone or an animal fall through the ice, call 9-1-1 immediately. Do not attempt a rescue.
If you fall through the ice:
• Stay calm, keep your head above water and shout for help.
• Kick and pull yourself onto the ice shelf, then roll toward shore.
• If you cannot get out within ten minutes, anchor yourself to the ice and continue calling for help.
