January is here and it’s typically a month of resolutions, fresh starts, and the hopeful anticipation of a year filled with growth, joy, and good news. Before I get to the “good news” there are some people I need to thank for the great year 2025 turned out to be. There are so many volunteers who turn up to help with activities. Thank you to all of them! There have been business sponsors who stepped up with funding. I try to recognize them close to the event they sponsored. Our latest sponsor is Lamb Halladay Real Estate who helped us with the Winter Market. Residents, I would encourage you to support our sponsors when you have the chance to do so. They are investing in Edgemont.

Movie Night was a smashing success! We will be repeating it in 2026. The office received a number of thank you notes from attendees. It’s always nice to hear that folks enjoyed the evening. I’ll share more information as it becomes finalized and as always, check out the ECA website.

Shari Pitka has been a very valuable resource to the ELM committee. She will be focussing on other priorities in 2026 and has had to withdraw from ELM. We will truly miss her guidance and thank her for sharing her knowledge and leadership. The good news is that we have found a replacement. Mark Koelbl will be stepping into Shari’s shoes. Mark has experience in working with ELM committees in other subdivisions and comes highly recommended. We welcome Mark to the team.

Our MLA, Julia Hayter, continues to be a big supporter of ECA. Julia was at our Winter Market to talk to residents and get a feel for what is on the minds of Edgemont residents. Provincial politics has been a wild ride lately, so conversations at the grassroots are important. In January, Julia will be hosting an event to help residents who rely on AISH or other social assistance programs to understand how to navigate that system. Watch for more information. As the final details will miss our publication deadline, I encourage you to check our website or follow Julia directly. For those on our email list, we will push a message to you once we have all the information.

The first Coffee and Conversations event of the year is on January 11, 2026, and based on the registration already in, this seems to be a topic that interests a number of people. The focus will be Wealth Management and Financial Planning skills needed to plan estates and create wills in Alberta and Canada that reflect your wishes. The session will be facilitated by Hash Assad and Rehana Begum from Assad Wealth Management. Free snacks and refreshments are provided. Check the website for registration details.

We are hosting a sip and paint on January 23, 2026, from 5:30 to 8:30 pm and the entry fee is $35 per person. Registration is open and includes a glass of wine and snacks. It’s meant to be a fun, relaxing event.

For kids, we also have an exciting “Paint the Rocky Mountains” art class being taught by a local Edgemont artist for ages 5 to 10 years old. The date is January 25 from 3:15 to 4:45 pm and the cost is $10—supplies included. Spaces are limited and registration is open. Check our website for details. We expect this to fill up quickly.

Our Lego Mania Competition is back! Mark your calendar for February 7, 2026. There are 80 spots available with three categories: Things that Go, Scenes and Buildings, and Animals and Figures. Registration for the Lego Mania is open. Check our website for details. Both participant builders and spectators are welcome. The creations are surprising! The imagination and the building skills of participants never ceases to amaze. How do they get those little blocks to fit together in such unique ways?

We are looking forward to Frost Fest on February 16. The event is at the ice rink, weather permitting. You don’t have to wait until Frost Fest to go down to the skating rink. As soon as the ice is skate worthy, the rink is ready for your enjoyment. Thanks to the volunteers who make the ice, maintain the ice, shovel the snow, and take care of all the many tasks that keep the rink an enjoyable outdoor feature in Edgemont. We have done some maintenance at the rink site. You may notice new lights for example and during the holiday season, we added festive lights to create the holiday ambiance.

Finally, looking forward to March, you can expect to hear about a flag contest that ECA will be running. Our goal is to have residents design flags that we can display on seven light standards in our area. There will be categories for competitors based on age and there will be a prize for the winning flag designer in each category. We are finalizing the theme and the timeline for the competition. I expect to be able to share more information in February.

Until the next edition of Inside Edgemont, stay warm!
