Hello Calgary-Bow,
December is here and school and community activities are gearing up before breaking for the holiday season. The Legislative Session is set to end on December 14th, and I am looking forward to returning to our constituency and participating in the winter festivities in our local communities. I will hosting a New Year’s open house at my constituency office (6307 Bowness Road NW) on January 6th from 1-3pm. I encourage everyone to drop by for some updates from the provincial government, there will be light refreshments provided.
In November, I had the privilege of delivering a number of Community Facility Enhancement Project (CFEP) and Community Initiatives Program Project-Based (CIP P-B) grant cheques to organizations all over Calgary-Bow. One of these, the Calgary French and International School in Cougar Ridge, received over $65,000 to help remodel their playground – which is much loved by students and the surrounding neighbourhoods. The Foothills United Church, which has been operating in Bowness since the 1940s, received over $7,000 for much needed repairs. CFEP and CIP grant funding offers support to organizations with a very broad scope of projects. If you or an organization you know of is interested in obtaining grants, contact my office and we would be happy to help.
As many of you may be aware, the federal government has introduced legislation to legalize cannabis across the country by the summer of 2018. I would like to thank everyone who has called, emailed or written letters to my office regarding the Alberta Cannabis Framework. This draft proposed a system for managing the legalized cannabis in our province and reflects the values of Albertans. It’s founded on four policy priorities:
- Keeping cannabis out of the hands of children;
- Protecting public health;
- Promoting safety on roads, workplaces and public places; and
- Limiting the illegal market for cannabis.
Now that the online survey has closed, the feedback about the proposed framework will be reviewed and proposed legislation announced early next year. If you would like to be kept apprised of updates please call or email my office.
Most importantly, I’d like to wish all of you a happy holiday season, I look forward to seeing you at local community events. The best way to stay updated with the happenings from my office and in the Legislature is to connect with me on Facebook, @DeborahforCalgaryBow, or on Twitter, @yycbow.
