Chaparral President’s Message – September

September signals the start of the Chaparral Community Association’s new board year and we look forward to a very busy year. Additionally, over the summer we have worked with the City to confirm various programs and initiatives for Chaparral resulting from the This Is My Neighbourhood (TIMN) program.

On August 25th we were happy to host a Backyard Bash in Chaparral Valley. With the City of Calgary’s support, the use of a fire hydrant created a temporary water park to splash in. Old fashioned backyard games and activities created a fun event for all ages. If you attended, you may have stopped by our CCA tent to hear about the other initiatives coming our way.

Creating a community hub in the Valley was identified in the TIMN engagement process. We have been working with City to identify the right project and after reviewing the options we are pleased to announce that Adopt-A-Rink is coming. The rink will bring a seasonal, temporary pleasure skating rink to the green space at Chaparral Valley Square. The skating rink would be initiated by the City but will require community volunteers to maintain the rink through the winter months. We will need at least 15 volunteers to be involved for flooding and clearing purposes. Volunteers will attend an information session and then will work together to maintain the surface through the season. Interested? Contact [email protected] for more information. Many hands make light work!

Pathway stencils can now be found on various pathways in the community. Take a different path next time you are out walking and find one of these great interactive activities.

Nordic trek walking program has been confirmed for the community. The city will provide a one-time instructor lead introductory course in the fall and will leave behind the poles as an ongoing asset. We are selecting a fall date to depart from the Primary Care Network (PCN) in Chaparral. Registration information can be found on Facebook @ChaparralCA or by emailing [email protected].

We are looking for a couple of dedicated volunteers to help start a weekly program, if you are interested in giving back while enjoying this activity in the community contact [email protected].

The beautification of several more visible garbage receptacles throughout Chaparral Lake, Ridge and Valley will be installed. These receptacles will be wrapped in images of mother nature and will be more attractive than the current standard brown paint!

Chaparral Valley Development

There is currently a land use change and new community proposal application being filed with the City for the lands adjacent to Chaparral Valley (referred to as the Shaw triangle, between Blue Devil Golf Course and the north east corner of Chaparral Valley). At time of publication submission, we have not been provided the application for review. Please follow us on Facebook for more current information and updates.

Monthly CCA meetings are resuming in September and everyone is invited to attend. Join us on Tuesday September 18th (third Tuesday) from 7-9 pm, at St Sebastian Elementary, 65 Chaparral Blvd. We look forward to meeting you.
