Thank you for electing me as your Ward 1 Councillor. Following being sworn in and a detailed City Hall orientation process, Council was tasked with passing the 2026 budget. During deliberations, I cut $9 million, or nearly 25% of the city’s climate budget. This money was funding “climate education initiatives,” not flood mitigation or wildlife protection. I support tangible initiatives that reduce pollution, such as increasing investment in public transit.
Although my motion to reduce the property tax increase to 0% did not pass, we reduced the tax increase from 3.6% to 1.6%. This decrease is a good indicator that this new council prioritizes low taxes and affordability. We also made significant investments in police, fire, and recreation.
I also sponsored a Notice of Motion to begin repealing blanket zoning. Many Calgarians support thoughtful growth, but do not want to lose the character of their communities in the process. Blanket rezoning places strain on infrastructure and ignores realities such as parking and garbage collection. I am fulfilling my campaign pledge to repeal blanket rezoning for Calgarians who have been negatively impacted. The next step is a Public Hearing scheduled for March 2026.
It has been wonderful to engage with the community recently. Our Ward 1 team participated in the 37th Mayor’s Food Drive Councillor Challenge at the Calgary Food Bank. I had the opportunity to tour the Simon House Recovery Centre during their holiday celebration. I spoke at the Jeunesse Classique Ballet Society’s Nutcracker performance at the Alberta Children’s Hospital. I also celebrated Hanukkah with Calgarians at the 37th Annual Calgary Community Menorah Lighting.
