The “Guidebook for Great Communities” has been a major issue for City Council. The approval of this guidebook would lead to the densification of single dwelling communities throughout our City. While the current guidebook does not impact any Ward 2 community, I fear that our established communities like Hawkwood, Ranchlands and Arbour Lake could be next for high density re-zoning if this current guidebook goes forward.
At City Council’s Public Hearing on the guidebook, I voted to postpone any decision on the guidebook until after the municipal election this fall. Unfortunately, that vote lost 11-3. I then seconded an amendment that was approved to have this matter delayed and brought to the May meeting of the Planning and Urban Development Committee. At this committee meeting, City Administration will develop and present a “What We Heard” report based on Council’s Public Hearing. Furthermore, this committee meeting will provide opportunity for amendments to be proposed for the Guidebook. Stakeholder engagement and further public participation will also be part of the upcoming committee meeting. I will continue to be engaged in these upcoming meetings to help ensure that this guidebook does not go forward in its current form.
Over the last year, over a dozen intersection safety improvements, including marked crosswalks, rapid flashing beacons, and traffic lights were installed throughout Ward 2 based on traffic modeling and resident requests. This year, we are looking at further areas for improvement. Already this year, a temporary crosswalk was installed at Symons Valley Parkway and 136 Ave, until development of a permanent intersection can be built. Please contact 311 and my office at [email protected] if you see problematic intersections in your community that require safety enhancements.
