Hello, Ward 6!
Update on the Olympic Bid Plebiscite
Mary Moran, the CEO of Calgary Economic Development was named the Chief Executive Officer of the Calgary 2026 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games Bid. In doing so, she becomes the first woman in Canada to lead an Olympic bid. I have had the privilege of working with Mary on the Calgary Economic Development Board of Directors, and I wish her well in this new endeavor!
Council has approved the Olympic bid plebiscite date and question. The plebiscite will be held on November 13, 2018. The question is:
“Are you for or are you against Calgary hosting the 2026 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games?”
Residents can choose between “I am for Calgary hosting” or “I am against Calgary hosting,” as the two possible answers.
Community Action on Crime Prevention, Addiction, and Mental Health
At the end of July, City Council passed a Notice of Motion that intends to address crime and social disorder by providing supports for mental health and addiction. The plan will see an expansion of existing social services agencies while providing new seed initiatives aimed at crime prevention and mental health. The plan will also allow the City to develop a citywide mental-health and addictions strategy.
A Note on The Start of the School Year
As we enter the month of September, I ask that you take extra caution when driving to work in the morning! Thousands of students will be returning to school and with that, I remind us all to be extra attentive in school zones and student loading spots. Check with your child’s school traffic coordinator on the rules in the pick-up/drop off zones!
