Frozen in February
We know the Alberta economy is recovering, but until that recovery is felt by all, our government is focused on supporting Albertans who need a hand now. Our future prosperity is in the hands of youth, and many of them are facing financial challenges. To support the quarter of a million post-secondary students who study and apprentice in Alberta, the government extended the Alberta tuition freeze for a fourth year.
The Alberta Government is also providing backfill payments to publicly-funded post-secondary institutions so that they don’t suffer from less tuition income. I am focused on making life better for all Albertans, and these measures ensure that post-secondary education remains accessible, sustainable and affordable in the long term.
We also want every Albertan to come home safe at the end of the day, which is why crucial updates to the Workers Compensation Act and the Occupational Health and Safety Act are being put into effect this year.
Changes to the Workers Compensation Board (WCB) system provide greater benefits and support to workers on their return to work. Premiums will also remain sustainable and affordable for employers.
Key legislation changes to Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) will better protect workers and bring protections into line with other provinces. This includes the right to refuse unsafe work, and protection from workplace violence and harassment.
Finally, I am delighted to announce that the government of Alberta is taking steps to bring Alberta’s historically high dental costs into line with the rest of Canada. The 2018 dental fee guide was produced with the Alberta Dental Association and College. It provides guidelines for appropriate fees, which is expected to encourage competition and rein in costs.
