A Serious Reflection on the Past Year

Calgary Elbow

As another year draws to a close, I reflect on the year that has passed.

Calgary continues to struggle with record-high unemployment. At an event I held in October, I heard from a number of small business owners concerned that the provincial government is standing in the way of getting people back to work. Changes to labour laws, WCB, and increases to minimum wage are all hitting small businesses hard.

The Springbank Off-Stream Reservoir project remains stalled at the federal level, with a revised timeline to restart the regulatory clock in mid-December. The Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency has requested more information from Alberta Transportation; this information is needed before they can proceed to the public consultation stage. I will continue to fight for SR1 as it is the right choice for protecting the city of Calgary.

Rejection of the Trans Mountain pipeline came as a nasty surprise to most of us. I believe the government should have worked harder to make the case that Canadian pipelines are good for the economy AND good for the environment. Pipelines are vital for the economic health of our province and country, and I am committed to pressure the government to do everything they can to get the pipeline built.

And finally, I have been pressing the government in the Legislature to improve dementia care for Albertans. Nearly one in ten Alberta seniors live with dementia, and each person living with dementia impacts up do a dozen friends and family.

You have my commitment to continue to work hard for the constituents of Calgary-Elbow and to hold the government to account to get Calgarians back to work.

Holiday Open House

I would like to invite you to join me for a family skate party on Saturday, December 15 from 1pm to 3pm at the Elboya Community Hall (416 Park Ave SW). Join me for cookies and warm beverages. There will be crafts for kids and we will be preparing care packages for a service agency in Calgary-Elbow.
